Port Arthur Valero Refinery
LJA Engineering provided engineering services to Bo-Mac Contractors, LTD on a design-build project for a new swing bridge to replace an existing bridge at Valero’s refinery in Port Arthur, Texas. The project goal was to increase operational functionality in opening and closing the span and to widen the bent spacing in the navigable waterway to allow for wider vessel passage on Taylors Bayou. The new bridge has 3 fixed spans approximately 85 feet each with a 4th span approximately 125 feet.
LJA services included structural design of the bridge, fender system, pontoon, bridge lighting for compliance with the United States Coast Guards regulations, assistance with regulatory requirements to obtain a nationwide permit, and mechanical and electrical system design.
To ensure adequate clearance for bridge operations, LJA developed a 3D model to simulate deployment of the pontoon and each end of the swing span moving into position past the fixed elements. LJA also provided design services for the hydraulic power systems and specifications for the bridge control architecture for easy and safe operations.
