King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) Campus
Innovation. The KAUST campus is certified LEED Platinum by the U.S. Green Building Council becoming the largest LEED-Platinum project in the world. LJA provided critical civil engineering services in accordance with certification requirements for this first-of-its-kind academic community.
The King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) main campus is comprised of 16 buildings including academic space, laboratories, auditorium, administrative buildings, library, conference space, parking garages, and other structures. The campus spans nearly 9,000 acres and includes a unique coral reef ecosystem that will be preserved as a marine sanctuary. LJA designed unique features of the project including entry plaza bridges and parking garages, and a tunnel system. Adjacent to the massive main campus is a Research Park with three buildings, Marine and Oceanic Research Center, marina, and commercial buildings.
For this project, LJA provided full civil infrastructure and site engineering services from conceptual to final design phases. LJA’s responsibilities included civil engineering design of mass grading, drainage, water, sanitary sewer and lab waste, multiple large scale sanitary and storm pump stations, roadways and pavements, bridges and tunnels, retaining walls, and structural supports for landscape features for both fresh and seawater pools. Civil engineering support was provided for the chilled water distribution network, underground medium-voltage electrical distribution, and underground telecommunication distribution in coordination with subconsultant engineers.
