With over 60 years of dedication to the Houston community, the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences (IFS) finally got the upgrade it desperately needed. IFS serves a vital role in the daily operations of a busy city like Houston. Its services can be divided into two major roles: medical examiner and crime laboratory. As Harris County continues to grow, the need for state-of-the-art labs also increases.
LJA was hired to provide site work on the new 3.2-acre complex. Our
civil engineering design services included grading, drainage, traffic, utility extensions, and construction administration. Careful consideration was given to the use of the property and localized flood protection. The building elevation was raised to ensure safe refuge during extreme events.
Phase 1 included a nine-story, 210,000 SF tower to house large scale laboratories, morgues, and training spaces and to provide room for administration. Green design features such as natural light, windows overlooking green spaces, ventilation and cooling systems, indoor air quality, water conservation, and minimal outdoor irrigation positions the new building as a candidate for LEED Silver Certification.
Extra care was taken in the planning stages to minimize the stress that families might experience when visiting the building by flooding spaces with natural light and outdoor views.
